SUMMARY:Matariki 2019
DESCRIPTION:Matariki is the Māori name for a cluster of stars which is visible in our night sky at a specific time of the year. In 2019\, from 25 to 28 June\, Matariki will re-appear in the dawn sky – signalling the start of the Māori New Year. \nIt is a time to celebrate new life\, to remember those who’ve passed and to plan for the future. And it’s a time to spend with whānau and friends – to enjoy kai (food)\, waiata (song)\, tākaro (games) and haka. \nOur tūpuna (ancestors) would look to Matariki for help with their harvesting. When Matariki disappeared in April/May\, it was time to preserve crops for the winter season. When it re-appeared in June/July\, tūpuna would read the stars to predict the upcoming season – clear and bright stars promised a warm and abundant winter while hazy stars warned of a bleak winter. \nBecause Māori follow the Māori lunar calendar\, not the European calendar\, the dates for Matariki change every year.  \nWhen to observe Matariki\n\nThe optimum time to observe the rising of Matariki is in the phase of the moon known as Tangaroa\, the moon of plenty. The Tangaroa moon phase occurs in the three or four days leading to a new moon and will fall on different dates each year. \nView TWOA Poster Here

SUMMARY:Toi Tangata Hui ā Tau 2020 Pātaka Oranga
DESCRIPTION:Toi Tangata Hui ā Tau 2020\nPātaka Oranga\nStorehouse for wellbeing\nNau mai haere mai ki te Toi Tangata Hui ā Tau 2020. Join us in February as we kick off our Hui ā Tau\, an annual hui which helps provide focus and traction for the workforce on the positive kai\, wai and kori tinana outcomes for our communities. The conference has become the preeminent hui in Māori nutrition and physical activity and is launching into its sixth year. \nThe theme of the Toi Tangata Hui ā Tau 2020 is Pātaka Oranga. The concept of Pātaka Oranga\, ‘storehouse for wellbeing\,’ acts as a symbol of our physical and cultural wellbeing\, embracing all the tools we have at our disposal to reach our full potential\, including kai\, wai\, korikori tinana and many more. \nPātaka has many literal and metaphorical associations in te ao Māori. It refers\, literally\, to the elevated platform for the storage of food or taonga and becomes a strong symbol of our knowledge and of all things we characterise as our wealth\, embedding the values\, traditions\, social and spiritual wellbeing of te ao Māori. Ultimately\, it is a symbol of safe keeping. \nIn this respect\, the concept of Pātaka Oranga reflects our commitment to help tangata achieve their full potential with the mātauranga we gather and share. \nParticipants of the Toi Tangata Hui ā Tau 2020 can be seen as guardians of the pātaka\, with a role in replenishing and sustaining the wellbeing of whānau and all communities within Aotearoa.

SUMMARY:Toi Ako Webinar: Waka Ama | More than a sport\, a lifestyle
DESCRIPTION:Tupuria King is an international waka ama champion athlete\, entrepreneur\, social media star and an academic. \nThe Ngapuhi and Tainui descendant was first introduced to the sport by his dad\, Dave King\, at age seven. He has been paddling professionally since 2012 and the 26 year old holds a Bachelor of Sport and Recreation as well as a Masters Degree of Sport\, Health and Human Performance. \nIn a bid to contribute to the body of scientific knowledge based around high performance waka ama athletes that compete at the world championships\, Tupuria’s Masters thesis focused on the physiology of Waka Ama. \nDue to COVID19\, Tupuria is bound to Aotearoa for now. Outside of running an online coaching service and merchandise store\, you might catch him out on Okahu Bay\, Hokianga Harbour or Lake Ngatu training out on the water.\nIn his spare time he is usually at the whanau farm in Broadwood\, Northland hanging or training with his whanau (all waka ama world paddlers in their own right) and partner\, rugby legend\, Tyla Nathan-Wong. \nAs keen waka ama paddlers across the country gear up to train for the National Waka Ama Championship races next year\, this one hour webinar delves into Tupuria’s waka ama journey\, what motivates him to succeed and some of his Masters research findings.

SUMMARY:Toi Ako Webinar: Kori tinana | Traditional Māori beliefs\, values and practices of physical activity
DESCRIPTION:Traditional Māori physical activity is distinguished by a Māori cultural definition understood through mātauranga\, with shared whakapapa to atua\, and practiced through tikanga. \nDespite a rich understanding and practice of Māori physical activity in a pre-European era\, the violent colonial experience in Aotearoa has resulted in a dominant view of physical activity that marginalises Māori perspectives and approaches. \nIn this kōrero Te Miri will discuss the findings of his Masters research that investigates the traditional Māori beliefs\, values and practices of physical activity and their relevance today. He will touch on the key themes that emerged through a kaupapa Māori analysis of interviews\, pūrakau and whakataukī. \nJoin us to hear about what characterises Māori physical activity; the ways in which mātauranga informs the beliefs\, values and practices of physical activity for Māori; and how these are relevant for Māori physical activity today.
