SUMMARY:Toi Ako Webinar: Waka Ama | More than a sport\, a lifestyle
DESCRIPTION:Tupuria King is an international waka ama champion athlete\, entrepreneur\, social media star and an academic. \nThe Ngapuhi and Tainui descendant was first introduced to the sport by his dad\, Dave King\, at age seven. He has been paddling professionally since 2012 and the 26 year old holds a Bachelor of Sport and Recreation as well as a Masters Degree of Sport\, Health and Human Performance. \nIn a bid to contribute to the body of scientific knowledge based around high performance waka ama athletes that compete at the world championships\, Tupuria’s Masters thesis focused on the physiology of Waka Ama. \nDue to COVID19\, Tupuria is bound to Aotearoa for now. Outside of running an online coaching service and merchandise store\, you might catch him out on Okahu Bay\, Hokianga Harbour or Lake Ngatu training out on the water.\nIn his spare time he is usually at the whanau farm in Broadwood\, Northland hanging or training with his whanau (all waka ama world paddlers in their own right) and partner\, rugby legend\, Tyla Nathan-Wong. \nAs keen waka ama paddlers across the country gear up to train for the National Waka Ama Championship races next year\, this one hour webinar delves into Tupuria’s waka ama journey\, what motivates him to succeed and some of his Masters research findings.

SUMMARY:Toi Ako Webinar: Kori tinana | Traditional Māori beliefs\, values and practices of physical activity
DESCRIPTION:Traditional Māori physical activity is distinguished by a Māori cultural definition understood through mātauranga\, with shared whakapapa to atua\, and practiced through tikanga. \nDespite a rich understanding and practice of Māori physical activity in a pre-European era\, the violent colonial experience in Aotearoa has resulted in a dominant view of physical activity that marginalises Māori perspectives and approaches. \nIn this kōrero Te Miri will discuss the findings of his Masters research that investigates the traditional Māori beliefs\, values and practices of physical activity and their relevance today. He will touch on the key themes that emerged through a kaupapa Māori analysis of interviews\, pūrakau and whakataukī. \nJoin us to hear about what characterises Māori physical activity; the ways in which mātauranga informs the beliefs\, values and practices of physical activity for Māori; and how these are relevant for Māori physical activity today.

SUMMARY:Māori Touch NZ Tournament
DESCRIPTION:Māori Touch NZ is delighted to announce the 21st Māori Touch Tournament\, which will take place on the 5 and 6 December 2020 at Rotorua’s International Stadium. Proudly hosted and organised by the Rotorua Touch Association\, the new venue has enabled the tournament to proceed for 2020. \nSo far over 50 teams have entered\, with strong Open Men’s and Open Mixed grade numbers. Entries will remain open until Sunday 15 November 2020. \nThe tournament will begin with a powhiri on Friday 5 December at 4pm with a special tribute to touch legend\, George Rogers\, who passed away in 2019. \n“George attended every Māori touch tournament from the inaugural event in 1997. He also played and coached Māori representative teams over the last twenty years\, but it was his commitment to Waitakere Māori Touch we will especially honour this year. We are very grateful to his partner\, Natalie\, his whanau\, and Waitakere Māori Touch to enable us all to acknowledge George\,” says Carol Ngwati\, Māori Touch NZ Chair. \nRotorua Lakes Council is pleased to welcome back Māori Touch participants to Rotorua and looks forward to hosting the up to 5\,000 people who attend the tournament over the weekend.  \nMāori Touch NZ is always warmly welcomed by Rotorua Lakes Council\, local Marae\, motels and all the volunteers who continue to support this important event on the Māori sport calendar.
