Toi Tangata are specialists in the area of positive health, fitness and nutrition and provide education programs to a range of clients, both Māori and non-Māori, throughout New Zealand. Toi Tangata also advises government and NGO’s on Māori public health nutrition and physical activity research, policy and practice. With the vision to enable whānau physical health and wellbeing within all communities, an indigenous enterprise that blends contemporary technical know-how with timeless Māori values and models of practice.

A position has come to market that will call to those with senior people and business management experience.  The position of Kaiwhakahaere Matua – Chief Executive Officer (CEO) purpose is to spearhead the national organisation, leading people and processes, deliver on existing contracts and identify new business opportunities and cement innovation as a key organisational characteristic.

The purpose and intent of the CEO is to innovate change and to lead the health sector in the delivery of positive health outcomes via kaupapa oranga Māori and Māori nutrition and physical activity services. Reporting to the Chair, you will work in partnership with the Board to be accountable for the overall success of the organisation.  Implementing the overall strategy, direction and goals, the CEO will oversee day to day service operations and functions, supervising fiscal functions, strengthening existing funding channels and serve as the primary organisational spokesperson.

Striking the right balance between strategic and organisational planning, this position will connect vision and strategy to ensure a robust link to the delivery of high-quality services to stakeholders. Establishing a high performing team that is skilled, engaged and passionate about what they do, you will further enhance stabilise a climate of trust where team members feel safe to be open and honest and interact authentically with one another. Overseeing the fiscal activities, including budgeting, payroll, and reporting and audit, this position works with Board to ensure financing to support strategic and operational goals.

A skilled communicator and astute relationship builder, you will utilise your ability to converse to diverse audiences, lobby Māori leaders and public officials to promote organisational services, maintain strong relationships with Māori organisations, government and NGO’s and seek out potential for future contracts, coalitions and joint ventures.

You will ideally have:

  • Experience in a general manager, operations management, or senior people leadership position.
  • Demonstrate the modelling of effective and courageous leadership that is both innovative and
  • An understanding of Te Reo me ona tikanga Māori.
  • Extensive people management mentoring experience.
  • Financial management experience with skills in financial planning, and the oversight of payroll, reporting and audit.
  • Experience in the translation of strategy into operational success.
  • Ability to work with complexity comfortably, are intellectually sharp, capable, and agile.
  • Experience with strategic planning.
  • Strong local and national networks and ties to iwi, hapū and community.
  • Demonstrated ability as a people influencer.

Background for application is open however, applicants from the nutrition or physical education industries and those with in depth understanding of the machinery of the Ministry of Health, as a key organisational funder, preferably the funding landscape would be well matched to this role. A tertiary qualification in health management or related discipline would be highly desirable.
